What brought them home
You never carried a spark. The lamps only made the square worth crossing, and every spark that came home walked there by itself. A landing close to one is a demand, and every demand is paid for in warmth and in time. A lit lamp asks; a landing insists. Only one of them gathers anyone.
Every night starts the sparks somewhere new. The gentlest lamplighters bring all twelve home without one fright, and it can be done: short hops, a wide berth round the rose marks, and a little waiting while the square settles. The marks are a forecast, not a promise. Sparks wander.
